In the early 500s AD in Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey) the capital of the Byzantine Empire, Empress Theodora hears word that a fight between the factions. When urged to flee, she says a prayer where she recalls the path that led her to this exact moment: her going from a mime performer to the most powerful woman in the Byzantine Empire. The lessons she learned about social class and power influences her decision to stand up for the throne at its most vulnerable moment.
